Abstract: THE USE OF PICTURE TO IMPROVE READING ABILITY IN UNDERSTANDING THE DESCRIPTIVE TEXT OF ENGLISH AT GRADES VII A AND VII B OF SMP NEGERI 2 MUARA, NORTH TAPANULI. The research objective was to improve students' reading ability In understand Descriptive Text of English by using picture as a media of learning.. The subject of the study was SMP Negeri 2 Muara, North Tapanuli. Where there are four classes in which each class consists of 32 students (VII-A to VII-D) whose total number of grade VII students is 124 students. And the sample in this study is grades VII-A and VII-B where the number of the two classes is 64 students. Of the 64 students to be studied are 15 students in grades VII-A and 15 students in grade VII-B. Data was collected using observation sheets. Discussion of research showed that the reading ability in understand descriptive text of English by using picture as a media of learning. Tujuan penelitian adalah meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam memahami teks descriptive Bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan gambar sebagai media pembelajaran.. Subjek penelitian adalah Siswa SMP Negeri 2 Muara, Tapanuli Utara Dimana terdapat empat kelas yang setiap kelas nya terdiri dari 32 siswa (VII-A sampai VII-D) yang jumlah keseluruhan kelas VII adalah 124 siswa. Dan sampel pada penelitian ini, yaitu kelas VII-A dan VII-B dimana jumlah dari kedua kelas tersebut adalah 64 siswa. Dari 64 jumlah siswa yang akan diteliti yaitu 15 siswa pada kelas VII-A dan 15 siswa pada kelas VII-B. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan lembar observasi. Pembahasan dalam penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan membaca dalam memahami teks deskriptif Bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan media gambar sebagai media pembelajaran. Kata Kunci: Gambar, Membaca
